10 good bullets from wolf’s blog on SEO.

1 Unique TITLE tag for each page that includes your page’s targetted keyword(s) plus the benefit followed by Company/Site name.
2 Unique META Description tag for each page that should be used to enforce the page’s usefulness and be the marketing pitch to the visitor.
3 A CSS styled H1 tag centered around the page’s main keyword(s) focus – as a side note when I spoke with Matt Cutts at SMX Advanced he said Google doesn’t weigh the H1 tag any heavier than an H2 or H4, but it shouldn’t be used more than once.
4 Content that is both informative, unique, and useful by fulfilling a need of your target audience.
5 URLs in a non-dynamic descriptive format.
6 A flat site structure with breadcrumb links.
7 Absolute internal linking.
8 An html user friendly site map plus the backup parachute of a sitemap.xml file.
9 Robots.txt file blocking any duplicate content (print pages, etc).
10 Using 301 sever side redirects to consolidate similar pages and domain changes, including canocalization such as www vs non-www.

Other notes:Forget about the old school keyword density equations, being completely W3C compliant, creating X amount of content, pages or acquiring X amount of links.

So, Im placing various links that I found interesting for different topics in this post.
Paid Links: Graywolf’s power point presentation on Google’s position on paid links. Great, quick read, explaining the paid link saga.

Will Facebook over through Google?: Video by Robert Scoble explains how this might happen in a period of four years. How search will be conducted in a different way.

Adsense block sites feature: SEO Roundatable wrote about the new feature. The Allowed Sites feature, enables publishers to specify which sites can display their ads. This will help prevent a person stealing your ads with your publisher ID on them, and getting your account banned for “invalid clicks.”

Google Trends attempts to provide insights into broad search terms. Google Trends is not new but the Hot Trends keyword feature is. This feature pinpoints keywords that, when compared to other keyword searches made on Google, appear to more active.

Read more about Google Hot Trends
Google Trends itself displays activity around keywords that are provided by users in the form of a searchbox, very similar to Google’s standard search, with the exception of the word “Trends” being displayed on under Google and on the search button.

Google Hot Trends designates the top 100 most active keywords as compared to other keyword searches. One of the things that impressed me with this feature, was that additional information provided along with the keyword.

Google provides:

A ranking of how hot the keywords temperature (Mild, spicy, volcanic, etc)

A chart showing the time of day and the search activity for the keyword

News stories containing the keyword

Blog postings containing the keyword

Google search results containing the keyword

Today, found an interesting post at Michael Grays Blog that reminded me of this topic.

Read More about Hyphens versus links

In this demonstration a simple Google search for a long tail phrase clearly show pages using the underscore with the keywords bold OR highlighted by Google. The site with the hyphened urls is number one BUT Google still recognized the sites with underscored urls in its SERP’s.

If the search engines cant find your blog then your missing what could amount to a lot of potential exposure. There is an interesting short and to the point video at Michael Grays Blog on how to optimize your WordPress Blog for the search engines. See the video here.

Note:

The marketing process remains the same, whether you get a cheap web hosting deal or an expensive one. However marketing professionals favor startlogic more, due to the reputation associated. Another cheaper option is bluehost.

Updated on 6.11.2007 (corrected typo and inserted example) Should you use hyphens or the underscore for your online website’s file names, subdirectories or in your content? Examples: your-site.com/my-files.htm or your_site.com/my_files.htm

Recently I noticed lots of hyphens being used in URLs, mostly by SEO or techie types of websites or businesses that are completely online like Amazon.com. The last few years Ive been focusing on search engines and SEO.

Read more on hyphens or underscore

It Immediately put this together. It makes so much sense that the search engine written by programmers would by smart enough to find these little details.

Ive never programmed a search engine but there are certain programming etiquette that is visible all over the web and if you’ve ever programmed, you will notice it. Examples are the hyphen versus the underscore. When writing code the computer will interpret this (FTP_Binary) a one word or phrase but it will interpret this is two words (FTP-Binary). They will NOT be understood the same way by the PC.

The underscore is read as a connector of the two words making them one word, where as the dash-hyphen is used to separate the words.

Another example of programmer syntax translating into the real world is words that start with lowercase letters and follow with a uppercase letters, like eBay. If your not a programmer and don’t know what im talking about, a good example can be seen here. Scroll down the page and you will see many code references that start with lowercase words and meet with uppercase letters pr words.

Often when declaring variables, classes and such the syntax will require names that are usually named in this manner. Other times the syntax will have names that are built in with this syntax.
