Do business books work?

Do business books work? Seth Godin asked this question on his blog . As I read the post, I actually found several questions rolled up in one. I’ll try not to drag this comment out too much but here is my response to that post.

I dont think, I know business books work. Business books have provided me with a wealth of knowledge and ironically, because a lot of folks dont read, kept me one or more steps ahead of colleagues for years.

Self promoting professionals that dont read are not a major issue to me if they have experience and PROVEN results for thier craft. However, the self proclaimed experts that do not have this citeria and do not have any idea of whats happening in thier industry because they dont read, are useless and living on borrowed time in my opinion.

Those sales associates and many others in the coporate workplace often are not given any mentoring to stay in touch with the Industry Outside of the company by reading. They are using the handbook of time which says “Well, we always did it this way, so why change it now”. An absolutely ridiculous position to take but its taken everyday by Big Business.

Not sure why marketers are comfortable with admitting to not reading anything. Time has shown that this business can turn on a dime. Every advantage is a good one. Including a good book.
