Seems to me this tool will allow Google to collect more specific data(local data) about its users.

MyMaps, as the new feature is known, allows consumers to select from more than one hundred mini-applications created by independent software developers. These allow users to overlay data on top of Google’s popular online map service.

This could be a huge step in the area of local search. Google will have even more data at its disposal, based on the feedback and usage of this tool. It would appear that most of the feedback would be from a local users point of view.

The GasBuddy.com overlay was very interesting, providing me with a list of all of the local gas station prices at the press of a button. Visit Google maps to see and use it for free.
