TIP: Customize your WordPress blog “more tag” in RSS feeds

Filed under: Wordpress plugins — Kyle M Brown @ 12:02 am

Have you ever seen blogs that display excerpts of a post on the main or home page and if you want to see the entire post you have to click on a link. This also applies to RSS feeds your viewing through you RSS reader. This link could be anyone of the following at the end of the excerpt:

  • (more…)
  • ->
  • continued
  • your custom message

Example:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat.

(more…)

These instructions were tested in WordPress 2.1.2. They may work in other versions, they may not.

  • (more…) = place this “<!–more–>” behind the last word in your excerpt. (without the quotes)
  • -> = place this “<!–more–><!–more–>” behind the last word in your excerpt. (without the quotes)
  • continued = place this “<!–more continued–>” behind the last word in your excerpt. (without the quotes)
  • your custom message = place this “<!–more your custom message–>” behind the last word in your excerpt. (without the quotes)

These should also appear in RSS Feed Readers as well.
